REMEMBERING SPRING :: tanna

Imgp3812 Perhaps it is just my current state of misery that makes me think summer this year in NYC is worse than last summer.   Day after day of wretched, stifling humidity and high temperatures is making me very cranky.   Yes, I know the weather situation is much worse in places like Miami, but that is why I don't live in Miami.   Some friends of mine love this warm, humid weather.   I think they pretend to love it just to aggravate me.   And why does the entire county of Queens get such a horrible smell in the air when the weather is like this?   Actually, I probably don't want to know the answer to that question.

Days like this make me long for Spring!   So I look at my flower pictures, taken at the Queens Botanic Garden in April, and try to cheer myself up.Imgp3870    Oh, and the fact that I am shortly going on vacation to the cool, dry Rocky Mountains also cheers me up!

PINEAPPLE FRENZY :: neon

Pineapples3My boyferiend Scott is an enthusiast of EVERYTHING. A journalist by profession and vocation, he gets excited and enthusiastic about many things every day and usually follows through with immediate action, acquiring objects of his current passion. The latest is - pineapples. Pineapples fall under the larger health craze that struck our household a couple months ago - juice extraction and consumption. Scott acquired a hydraulic press juicing machine, and now it rules our lives. Fruits and vegetable are ordered on the web and arrive in large quantities from Fresh Direct (there are no grocery stores in our neighborhood - NYC garment district & 5th avenue where zoning does not allow grocery stores.) Our place looks and smells like a vegetable garden.

Once the thought of pineapples infested Scott's brain, 6 fresh pineapples instantly appeared in our kitchen. (Because one is just not enough when you have a craving for pineapples and you tend to think BIG!)
Pineapples1
Apparently pineapples are similar to papaya in that they contain proteolytic enzymes that break down and "digest" protein we consume. The health benefit is the general rejuvenation of the body's systems thanks to improved digestion. The protein digesting enzyme found in the pineapple is called bromelain, but, unlike in papaya, it resides not in the meaty flesh of the fruit, but mostly in its rind. So one of the pineapples was immediately dispatched for juicing. Here is the color of the juice extracted from pineapple rind, after it has been mixed with some parsley juice, carrot juice, and garlic juice - !!!
Pineapples4

I was too intimidated by the ferocious look of the pineapples to try the juice made from their rind, but I did try the juice obtained from the flesh of pineapple. An interesting discovery was that the home-extracted pineapple juice is not sweet and has no distinct pineapple flavor. When you taste the dry pulp left from the juice extraction, you realize that all the flavor stayed in the pulp. The juice has a neutral "fruit" taste.

TE AMO BUENOS AIRES :: sherene

Cafe_tortoni_2

If you’ve completely lost faith in the ever-declining value of the American dollar—this is the destination. After traveling to Paris and having to cough up $7 for a cup of tea, I had almost resigned to falling in love with domestic travel. Although I used to make yearly pilgrimages to India annually, enjoying the 45 rupee to a dollar exchange rate (back in ’06), after an onslaught of health issues, as is par for the course when traveling there, my immune system begged me to stop.

Hotel B.A. has been toted as the Paris of South America, and although it deserves such comparison in terms of its café life and fabulous shops, it also deserves its own status. It’s truly unique in a myriad of ways and the people are unbelievably warm and charming.  They dress to the nines, and say exactly what’s on their mind, no censorship! – so refreshing!

Famous for cheap plastic surgery and Botox, but what might be less well known, is that it’s a Mecca for psychoanalysis. They take their Lacanian analysis very seriously. It’s actually fashionable to be in analysis the way it was in New York City in the 60’s, when great artists like Martha Graham swore by their analytic experience in fostering their creative self-actualization. Especially in the trendy district called the Palermo, (their equivalent of Nolita or Williamsburg) brimming with emerging young designers and artists, there is a strong buzz around Lacanian analysis—an interesting branch of psychoanalysis where the analyst can decide to end the session whenever he or she feels the analysand needs to be interrupted, even after only 5 minutes if he feels it will wake the person up or shake the process up. Can’t say I agree with such extreme measures, but it’s fascinating to me that it’s become so popular there.

Highlights of B.A.:

Roots_3 The Recoletta Cemetery: a dream setting for the next GBD DVD—I wonder how many music videos have been shot there?
It’s gorgeous, sacred, dark and eerie at the same time despite the throngs of tourists.

Lingerie shopping at Las Oreiros in the Palermo—what you imagine naughty Argentinean princesses wore. They even wrap up your prized possessions in a satin hatbox. Sigh.

High_tea High Tea at the Alvear Palace Hotel in the Recoletta

Day of Beauty at any of the notable spas. You can get pampered for an entire day including facials, body scrubs, mani/pedis, reflexology etc for under $200, something that would cost a small fortune in the city. And the aestheticians are amazing there!

Cafe_tortoni2_3 Dinner at the Café Tortoni. The best grilled cheese (or jamon y queso if you’re not veg) and hot chocolate in the city!

Shopping in the Barrio Norte. I snagged some of the most amazing vintage Swarovski crystal costume jewelry at a store called Faroma. For shoes: Mishika; and for handbags, Own. They will soon be selling their pieces of art at Barney’s, but in B.A. you can get creations that would cost you upwards in the thousands for under a $100. Crazy! I sound like a materialist mama gone mad! It happens there with so much affordable beauty! Watch out!

Pastries or fresh orange juice at Francesca’s in Patio Bullrich in the Recoletta. Their version of a mall is like a palace compared to some of our corporate-fueled mega-monstrosities. It’s tiny and only filled with magical little shops and cafes. No screaming children, and you’re not left with that feeling of nausea after .002 seconds of entering.

NEW YEAR'S EVE REPORT :: neon

Our New Year's Eve celebratory activities started with a photoshoot - Blanca for the cover of one of the upcoming "Fantasy Bellydance" DVDs. Blanca arrived with a suitcase filled with her costume, a couple evening gowns and a few bottles of Veuve Clicquot. One of those bottles was immediately put to use. It was a vigorous and uncompromising start to the night of revelry and debauchery.

9

As Blanca transformed from a bellydancing nymph to a NYC party girl, we went over our partying options and confirmed our enthusiasm for the event co-hosted by Carmine Guida and Liz Free - a party for the lost souls of the bellydance world and all sorts of bohemian misfits: we definitely belonged there.

New Year's resolution: Seduce Carmine in 2008.

We danced till 3 to live music - Carmine, Pete List and friends. It was great to meet the new year with our creative family, where you don't have to explain to strangers what you do for living and how you survive as an artist. Carmine and Liz, many thanks for the fabulous night! A few pictures - below; more - coming.

MORE HOLIDAY ACTIVITY :: neon

How does one return to normalcy after the holidays? Soon after breakfast, champagne, mulled wine and port start flowing here in smooth succession, turning the world into a magical swirl of colorful beauty. I haven't worked out in a few days. Here my sister Elizabeth, a Laura Ashley furniture freak, displays to me her mirror desk from the Laura Ashley "Gatsby" Art Deco-style collection and other Laura Ashley etched-mirror items.

Among the gifts I received today was this antique Russian cameo: my parents had it set in modern gold setting.

VISITING FAMILY IN OXFORD :: neon

Here I am, for 4 days in Oxford, UK, to visit my family -- reflecting on the patterns of the fog in my sister Elizabeth's frost-dressed garden.

Dead leaves and flowers, decomposing fruit, seeds and grass are trimmed with frost. Frost-covered, cobwebs turn thick, displaying every nuance of their design.

Behind Elizabeth's house, beyond the garden, a wheat field coated in thick fog extends far away, ending somewhere over there, at the Victorian canal.

FATE OPENED THE DOOR :: sarah

For so long I have wanted to go to the Middle East. I have come so close many times over the past few years but weather it be tragedy or poor timing the fates decided for me to wait until this moment. That’s right, the moment has presented itself and I am hopping on the plane Monday. I will now be able to add cities to my facebook map.

I reached out to Eva Cernik. Eva does dance tours there every year. I would love to go on one of her tours. She is such a peach. She hooked me up with some great info. One piece of advice she gave was to not fall in love with a carpet salesman. I also talked to Leni Wilson of Scott and Serena Wilson who have done dance tours for years (I tried to do one on those tours too). She hooked me up with a wealth of info on shopping and dance teachers. I emailed with Michael a fellow photographer who went last year and he gave great info too maybe stay in the same room and find “Michael was here” graffiti. Shooster explained the ways of money and Alyra spun romantic tales of Turkish baths.

I sat all day today trying to pack. Somehow nothing seems to be the right thing to bring. Finally I had to put the mini shampoo bottles down and scoot off to perform at Mezzo Mezzo. I thought with the night being so chilly that no one would come. But to my delight Leni and Scott came. And the sweetest Asian girl, who I can never pronounce her name, much less embarrass myself to try to spell. Robert was on Oud. He played a really special taxsim for me. The night rounded up with Leni giving more advice about traveling to Turkey and asking me to blog about the trip. I wonder if anyone read travel blogs or are they just more of a diary for the traveler… Well, back to fretting over what to pack.

CONNECTING WITH ANOTHER PRINCESS :: sarah

Princessfarhana_smPrincess Farhana is in NYC. I went to see Margret Cho’s show where Princess Farhana is performing. It is a wonderful production. I attended her class. We also went out and had a blast talking about costume design, dancing and performing. She too has created a Mata Hari costume! She is a wonderfully inspirational person to be around. I felt as though we were on the same PRINCESS page. She hooked me up with her brand new Belly Dancing with Fans instructional DVD- I can’t wait to watch it! Check out her other NYC shows this month: http://www.princessfarhana.com/news.htm

MUSICAL GUESTS INCREASE PROPERTY VALUE :: sarah

Pangia CD vol fivePat and Denis of the band Pangia, performed at RAK this year. They were promoting there new CD. The new CD has photographs by me on it. This CD has some really wonderful taxsims. This cd is different from their earlier releases because it is the first that has no lyrics. This feature is wonderful since you never have to worry what the words are saying. I am always nervous to pick songs with lyrics because it always requires translation, and relying on others to get that right. (and of course the have the best photography on the cover ) Go to their website and check it out.

This year they wanted to come back for another photoshoot. I offered for them to come and stay at my home. Pat is 6’5 and we had a low hanging light in the entrance way. Pat successfully whacked his head on it each time he walked in the hallway. Pat being experienced finding his way around a hardware store offered to change it for us. I jumped at he offer. He also noticed that since we installed our own hardwood floors it complicated the closet door situation. I had a fabric curtain hanging there. Pat trotted off to the hardware store and several inches of sawdust later I have the most glorious perfectly hung closet doors you can ever wish for! Denis was on the spot with a vacuum cleaner after he finished. I am still in shock at how generous Pat and Denis were to us! Who else has non-family member guests that improve the resale property value of someone’s home. These kinds of guests can stay ANYTIME!

Charleston was happy to find chips and other food in Pat’s luggage. Here he is resting after eating a big suitcase meal.
